Painting Bottom Groove
« on: March 28, 2010, 06:54:54 PM »
Does anyone Paint the bottom groove on their wedges if they aren't already? Just curious as to what people think.

Paint would fill up the groove.
The main purpose of a groove is to channel dirt, water and debris out of the way so there is more surface contact with the ball.  Putting paint in the groove defeats the goal of the groove.  It is only one groove, but I still wouldn't do it...

Then why do the OEMs do it? Does the bottom groove really matter?

No clue.
Cally's don't do it.
I think that Cleveland did it on some wedges, but have moved away from doing it.
What wedges are you refering to?

I can see how it would help with alignment if your wedge had a rounded leading edge, but I can't see how it would have a negative effect on spin.

My Ping tour wedges have them painted. I am sure I can get used to wedges with out paint though.

I can see how it would help with alignment if your wedge had a rounded leading edge, but I can't see how it would have a negative effect on spin.
Again, the main purpose of the groove is to channel water, dirt and debris away from the face so that there is more surface area in contact with the face.  That friction will impart spin on the golf ball.  When water, dirt and debris gets in the way, less friction will occur and the ball will not spin as much, i.e a "flier".   Putting paint in the groove will limit the size of the groove and thus reduce the amount of water, dirt and debris that can be channeled away.
