Wedge Theory... what's yours?
« on: March 29, 2010, 09:57:42 AM »
I used to carry 3 (48-54-60), but now I carry 4 (46-52-58-64).  I found that I needed the extra 2 degrees to get me exactly 100 yards, and I paced everything off 6 degrees to allow for the X-Wedge / Super Lobber!

All are CG12, but the 46 and 52 are BP and the 58 and 64 are DSG RTG...

If you spend as much time as I do thinking about wedges, you will enjoy this!

I carry 4, 48/52/56/60.  I've given up tighter yardage gaps in my fairway woods and long irons in favor of more precision with my scoring clubs.  I'm much better at sticking it close from 60-125 yards out than 215-250 yards, so I decided I'd rather have more options with my wedges.

I play a 48* Mizuno MP-67 PW with Scratch 1018 D/D wedges.

I carry 3. I use the K.I.S.S system with my wedges. Keep It Simple Stupid.  I am trying a 54 instead of a 52. I hardly ever use my PW.

My PW is 45* GW 50* SW 55* and LW 60*, this combo works for me. Not being a bomber I need a nice gapping between my wedges.

Here is what I started with.  PW 46, 52, 56, 60.  I dropped the 60 because I would either chunk it or blade it.  So was down to 3.  Then I was having problemsin the 50-70yd range so I went and got a 62 and could could hit it right at 60 yards which seemed to help.. on artificial grass...  On the course back to chunking and blading.  I hit my 52 wedge around 120 and my 56 right around 100.  I found myself not hitting it often enough to keep so I sold it.  I have since figured out how to hit my PW from 115 to 130 by varying the ball position and choking up and down on the club.  Also I have figured out how to control the 56* to hit shots from 100 and under.

So here I am.... 46* stock TM r7 wedge and a Vokey SM 56*.

I carry a 48,52,56,60 it normally doesn't work out but my theory in my head is that I hit my 48 125-110, my 52 110-90, my 56 90-65 and my 60 from 60 in and then use a all four around the green depending on lie and how much green I have to work with and roll etc... I try to stick to this plan but usually I am a few yards off one way or the other but can get close enough to 3 putt hahaha

My wedges look a lot like TnGolf77's mix. I have a 48 that goes up to 120, a 52 that is up to 105, a 56 that is a 90 yd club and a 58 that is up to 75 but is mainly a sand club. I have a few key yardages that I have a swing and a club for, (not necessarily a full swing but one I know I have.) I have a 115 yard shot with the 48, a 100 yard shot with the 52, a 90 and a 50 yard shot with the 56. (The 58 will go 75 full, but I would rather work off the 50 or 90 yard swing with the 56 for that distance.) I just work off those few distances with those clubs to range my scoring shots. In my head its just a little harder 50 yard shot for 65, or a little easier 90 yard shot for 75.

Learn your wedges, break your grooves in and then wear them out, (your wedges and your opponents)
